Oxford Eats: Top steak outs

Oxford Eats: Top steak outs

Once upon I time, I would only eat a steak if it was ‘well done’. As I have gotten older, my steak’s become rarer. Maybe that has a lot to do with where I buy steak from. If eating at home, I tend to treat myself by going to the butcher, or sourcing the finest range in a supermarket. When it comes to eating out, I love to try those restaurants who are known for sourcing and cooking the best steaks around.

In Oxford – especially more recently – we are becoming spoilt for choice. With the addition of new steak houses, grills, smoke houses and specialised pub menus, going out to eat a good steak in Oxford is easier than ever before. I have narrowed down a few of my top steak eats in Oxford.

  1. The Chester

Famous for their steak platter, the The Chester never disappoints. Their steak platters come in 2 sizes to feed between 2-4 people. All platters come with an abundance of juicy steak, usually cooked medium-rare, alongside some freshly cooked green, salad and chips. I’ve eaten here so many times and each time I leave feeling very satisfied and full!

2. Spiced Roots

Spiced Roots is a relatively new Caribbean restaurant in Oxford – offering an almost fine-dining experience, Caribbean style. I couldn’t wait to visit, and didn’t (in a million years) think I would end up ordering steak! Once I read steak with rum sauce on the menu, I could not help myself. It was honestly, one of the yummiest steaks I’ve eaten – seasoned to perfection and not too spicy (bare in mind I do like spice!). It is a little on the expensive side if you go there for a 3 course meal and cocktails (their cocktails are amazing!), but totally worth it.

3. Miller and Carter Steakhouse

There was a lot of hype surrounding the opening of Miller and Carter in Oxford. I’d walked past when visiting Liverpool once, and I remember it smelling amazing! I had only heard good reviews prior to my visit – all of which were spot on. The steaks are huge and I really struggled to finish (obviously I did though!). This is a chain which lives up to the hype, and I look forward to my next visit!

4. Marco Pierre White Steakhouse

I visited Marco Pierre Whites’s new addition to Oxford back in August. This the second restaurant of the Marco chain to open in Oxford. I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect, however – it has to be one of the nicest three-course meals I’ve ever eaten (I know, big statement!). From starter to dessert, it all tasted amazing – the steak was another level and cooked to perfection. I will definitely go back.

5. Portabello Restaurant

This isn’t the first time that I have mentioned Portabello restaurant on Lauren Ellen. It has been a while since I last visited, but it remains one of the best places to get a steak. They serve the leanest piece of rump with a garlic butter, chips and rocket. I can’t explain how tasty it is, you just need to go and try it for yourselves.
