I love a mini getaway on the weekend and my birthday is always a perfect excuse. Earlier this month, I decided to head for a London getaway.
Joseph had been given an experience day as a present so it was the perfect opportunity to make use of this. We went for a 2 hour beet tasting experience at Islington Brewhouse & Kitchen, which included a free burger! When we arrived we were the only people taking part, which was great as we got to ask lots of questions.
We learnt about the history of brewing beer in the UK and how it’s made today. The Brewhouse actually brew their own beer in-house which is quite a rare thing nowadays. It was fascinating to see it all in action and then taste the results. We tasted a great variety of ales, casks and lagers – I never realised how much sugar went in to beer!
After the tasting, we were given a choice of burger.. so many to choose from! I went for the beer batter chicken burger – it was so tasty!
We stayed at The Montcalm at the Brewery in London City. I was really looking forward to my stay but I was slightly underwhelmed with our room. For 5 star luxury hotel I expected a bit more space, however the staff there were fantastic and really made our stay enjoyable.
For dinner, I’d booked us in to Gaucho restaurant near Tower Bridge. I’d heard really good things about this place and hadn’t eaten at an Argentinian restaurant before. Gaucho is famous for their variety of steaks and wines, and I was not disappointed. The atmosphere, service, food and wine were all amazing. I wish I had taken more photos of the food, but I was totally in my element and enjoying the experience. Next time – there will definitely be a next time – I will create a full post of my experience with photos.
The next day I needed something carby to combat the lingering effects of red wine from the previous evening. We found a pub nearby that served huge chicken burgers! Not sure if it made me feel better or worse (meh!) but it tasted yummy!
Where do you like you to go on a mini-getaway? Let me know in the comments 🙂
